Demand Courtesy & Mutual Respect

Under extreme conditions, there may seem little energy for common courtesies - or any need. Stress can narrow the focus and blur the edges. But the edges are where your team is currently existing.

During Shackleton's antarctic expedition, there were conflicts, of course, but the crew managed to maintain a sense of civility. He reminded the crew on more than one occasion that "a little thanks will go a long way." And so will "please," "excuse me," and the other familiar phrases that support social interaction.

Insisting on common courtesy in the workplace creates an environment of mutual respect and can go a long way to thriving in tough times. Remember, "what you walk past, you endorse." Take the lead and set the example.

Footnote: Being an Essendon supporter, I hope courtesy and respect return to the club after the current upheaval. A once proud and admired club is currently on its knees. Strong leadership has never been more required than it is now.
